About the Recipient Hospitals

Immaculate Heart Hospital and Maternity Hospital, Urualla, Imo State

The Immaculate Heart Hospital and Maternity Hospital is located in Urualla, Ideato North LGA, Imo State . It was established in the 1940s by Irish missionaries to cater to the medical needs of women and children in the old Orlu Province. Today, the hospital is along a major highway and is now the “go to” place for people within a 40 mile radius. They also cater to travelers in the numerous car accidents that occur on the expressway as well as armed robbery victims that get hurt on that route.

Oro General Hospital, Oro, Kwara State

Oro General Hospital is located approximately 50 miles from Ilorin, the State Capital, and it is the only general hospital that provides primary and specialized health care services to about 28 towns and villages.

Kafachan General Hospital, Kafachan, Kaduna State
Kafachan is located in the southern part of Kaduna State, For decades, Kafachan was a bustling railroad junction, and that importance led the settlement to leap beyond its initial limits and subsequently blossom into a full-blown urban center. The Kafachan General Hospital is a 350-bed hospital that service, not just the residents of Kafachan, but residents of towns and villages within a sixty mile radius of the area
Emory, Medshare & NWAG
Emory Healthcare Staff & Medshare Partner With NWAG To Address The Health Needs Of Three Hospitals

The employees of Emory Health Care sponsored a 40-ft container of medical supplies and equipment to benefit University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu State University Teaching Hospital and Calabar General Hospital. Apart from sponsoring the container, the Emory staff also underwrote the visit of Medshare’s Biomedical Engineer, Mr. Eben Amstrong to the two hospitals in Enugu to conduct staff training and technical assistance on how to use the donated equipment.

About the Recipient Hospitals

University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH)

UNTH, located in Enugu is one of two teaching hospitals in that city. Over the years, many of the health professionals have been trained with the highest standards and have proven that they can effect a significant positive change in Nigeria and in Africa’s healthcare system.. The College of Medicine carried out the first open heart surgery in sub-Saharan Africa in 1974. It has since evolved into the center for cardiothoracic excellence for the West Africa region. Because of lack of funding, a lot of the medical research that used to take place in this hospital has been suspended. There is lack of infrastructure to address some of the medical challenges that the hospital face.

Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH)

Enugu State University Teaching Hospital is a 250- bed hospital that provide medical services to not just Enugu, but the surrounding areas also. In 2006, there were 15,076 visits to the Antenatal Clinics alone. About 3000 were Antenatal booked cases, Monthly booking is about 200. Yearly deliveries is over 1,200 and about 15% required admission in the Neonatal ward. Babies share the same facility with the adult, when ideally it should be one patient per station.

Calabar General Hospital, Calabar

Calabar, Population of 17 thousand is the capital of Cross Rivers State in Nigera. The Calabar general hospital is one of three hospitals in the city, but the only one managed by the State government. With thousands of people depending on it for services, the resources are scarce and hard to come by. According to the Cross River State government report, there are numerous health challenges facing the State despite the efforts by the government. Those challenges include, High maternal/child mortality rate, High morbidity and mortality rate, dilapidated state health infrastructure, lacking in both basic and advanced equipments, The high prevalent rate for the HIV/AIDS pandemic in spite of the recent drop and shortage of essential health personnel across all the professions of health.

NWAG hopes that the donation of the medical supplies to the three hospitals will be the beginning of alleviating some of the challenges that the hospitals face.

Our sincere thanks go to Efik National Association for sponsoring portions of this project. The Cross River State Government and ESUTH for thier support.
